Professor Gleeson talks to us as we celebrate publication of his great healthy lifestyle guidebook, ‘Eat, Move, Sleep, Repeat’…
There are many books on specific diseases and their treatments and some on prevention strategies but usually the focus is on only one disease (e.g. coronary heart disease, hypertension, chronic kidney disease, diabetes, cancer etc). Very few (if any) provide comprehensive coverage of multiple potential health problems.
There are way too many books by TV celebrity medics, fitness gurus and chefs about healthy lifestyles and weight loss with heavy focus on dieting and minimal science content. I have found that many of them contain serious inaccuracies that can be misleading. Often, wrong information is given about such things as how much and what type of exercise we should be doing to burn fat and lose weight or just to stay healthy. In fact, most of these books are opinion-based (trust me I’m a doctor etc). Very few are evidence-based and do not explain the underpinning science for the advice that is given. I wanted to address these issues by writing a book that provides explanations of the science that underpins the correct, evidence-based guidelines for everything a person needs to know to make their health optimal – that is, the best it can be.

My book is different to all the other healthy lifestyle books you have read. No multiple photos of the author, gimmicky quick-fix solutions and opinions. The scientific evidence is explained in a way that any reasonably intelligent person can understand and the important facts and figures are all there with the best available, accurate, up-to-date advice and easy to follow practical tips and guidelines. All you need to know about the numerous modifiable lifestyle behaviours that can influence your health: diet, exercise, and sleep, are fairly obviously the three most important ones (hence the book title) but I also discuss personal and food hygiene, how to avoid common illnesses like colds and tummy bugs, how to lose excess weight, and how to take care of teeth and gums, eyes, ears, bones, gut etc.

I also provide a unique, effective and safe personalized weight loss plan for those of you wanting to lose some of that excess body fat without having to stick to one boring diet for weeks on end. All are suitable guidelines for anyone aged 18-70 years: no fad diets or high intensity exercise regimens here. The book also contains several helpful educational features such as every chapter beginning with a list of objectives and finishing with a list of key points. Plus, all key terms are defined in an extensive glossary.
You can get your copy of the very brilliant ‘Eat, Move, Sleep, Repeat‘, from all good bookstores and online retailers.
Happy Publication Day, Professor Gleeson!
